THE RANCH
THE BEST MOMENTS, CAPTURED

Pheasant
Ringneck Pheasants originated in China and were brought to America in 1881. Since then they have spread throughout America and thrive in grasslands. At Alberton Orchards we raise and release Ringneck pheasants for the benefit of our guests. The colorful game birds get along great with our bison and can be spotted throughout the property. They like to hide in tall grass or shrubs and usually run before they will take to flight.

Bison
Brought back from the edge of extinction, these magnificent animals are thriving in Montana. In 1883, Teddy Roosevelt traveled to the Dakota Territory to hunt bison. After spending a few years in the west, Roosevelt returned to New York with a new outlook on life. He paved the way for the conservation movement, and in 1905, formed the American Bison Society with William Hornaday to save the disappearing bison. Alberton Orchards proudly invests in the future of American Bison. We support conservation and also harvesting Bison when appropriate. While these wild animals are to be enjoyed from a distance, we can get you close enough in our wagon ride to have a safe and meaningful experience.

Scottish Highland Cattle
Highland Cattle are a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. They originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and have long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region. As well as being rustic and hardy, they are gentle and social creatures that enjoy being combed and fed by hand. The bulls can weigh up to a whopping 800kg, and the cows up to 500kg, and their milk generally has a very high butterfat content. Their distinctive long hair keeps them warm in winter, offers protection from the brush and undergrowth, protects their eyes from flies, and contributes to their stunning appearance which makes them so popular.

The Ranch at Alberton Orchards

Our ranch is a sanctuary to both Scottish Highland Cattle and American Plains Bison. We take great pride in caring for our animals and providing a stress-free range for them to roam. While our Bison are meant to enjoy from a distance, our Scottish Highland cattle love people and can be enjoyed up close.
